Overview
Afamelanotide is a melanocortin-1 receptor agonist available as the prescription implant Scenesse for adults with erythropoietic protoporphyria, or EPP. Its role concerns painful phototoxic reactions and light exposure in a rare disease. It is not interchangeable with melanotan II or an ordinary cosmetic tanning product.
Community Use
No exact afamelanotide profile from PeptideDosages or Peptidepedia was verified. The lack of a named community page does not justify importing an MT2 loading phase, injectable amount or tanning regimen. Different molecules, formulations and intended populations need their own evidence, particularly when an approved implant is involved.
Doses, Durations & Cycles
Published dosing regimens. Product-label and study regimens for education, not instructions for self-treatment. Product, indication and route matter.
| Route / formulation | Dose / reported phases | Frequency | Duration / break | Notes and source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Subcutaneous implant placed by a trained healthcare professional | 16 mg implant | Every 2 months | Erythropoietic protoporphyria treatment Break: No informal tanning cycle established by this label | FDA prescribing information SCENESSE |
Important context: The implant cannot be treated as interchangeable with an injectable powder.

The table reflects clinician-administered implant and study context. Scenesse’s label defines the product and scheduled care. An implant’s content cannot be converted into a consumer injectable cycle or a tanning-maintenance amount from this article.
Research Findings
Two randomized trials studied EPP and pain-free exposure to direct sunlight. They also assessed phototoxic reactions and quality of life. The trials answer a disease-specific question, not whether healthy individuals should use an implant to change appearance or increase recreational sun exposure.
U.S. Approval & Access
Scenesse is FDA-approved for its defined adult EPP indication. DailyMed lists DEA Schedule: None. That does not authorize self-implantation, an unapproved substitute or any other melanocortin product. Approval belongs to the finished medicine and labeled use, not a shared tanning-related mechanism.
What It Does in the Body
Melanocortin-1 receptor activity promotes pigment-related biology. The controlled-release implant has its own exposure profile; the label describes an approximately 15-hour apparent half-life. This does not establish an individual onset, peak protection or duration of benefit, and pigmentation is not a promise of unrestricted or risk-free sun exposure.
Benefits & Reported Experiences
The EPP trials found improvements in pain-free sunlight exposure and quality-of-life measures. Results should not be interpreted as a cosmetic tan guarantee or proof of universal photoprotection. A specialist plan should assess meaningful disease-related function while preserving appropriate light-protection measures and monitoring.
Side Effects & Risks
Label concerns include implant-site reactions, pigmentation changes, nausea and hypersensitivity. Existing and new pigmented skin lesions need appropriate examination. A treatment associated with pigmentation should not be assumed harmless simply because the visible outcome looks familiar; the patient’s rare disease and dermatologic context matter.
Delivery Options
The product is an implant administered by a trained healthcare professional. It is not a self-injection program, oral supplement or interchangeable research vial. This article supplies no implantation tutorial. Access and administration should be discussed with the qualified specialist responsible for the actual prescription product.
Product Quality & Storage
Scenesse’s label specifies refrigerated storage at 2–8°C and protection from light. These are instructions for the professional-use implant, not a shelf-life claim for other melanocortin materials. Confirm the authorized product and treating center rather than evaluating suitability from a marketplace photograph or purity statement.
Combinations & Interactions
An approved EPP implant does not establish a safe stack with MT2, other pigment-related substances or cosmetic products. Combination effects and exposure need their own assessment. There is no consumer combination schedule here, and shared receptor terminology should not be treated as permission to add another material.
Talking With Your Provider
If painful photosensitivity or EPP is a concern, a specialist can confirm the diagnosis and available care. If the goal is tanning or appearance, afamelanotide’s rare-disease evidence should not be repurposed into a promised solution. A clinician can help distinguish a cosmetic preference from symptoms that deserve diagnostic evaluation.
